Rory McIlroy’s Foundation, the Rory Foundation, is to donate to Mencap NI, a charity that works alongside children and young people with a learning disability and their families.
The expected donation of up to £250,000 from the Rory Foundation will support Mencap NI’s Big Step Forward appeal, raising money for a new facility in Belfast to provide life-changing support to children with a learning disability and their families.
A further donation of up to £250,000 in match funding has also been pledged by the Rory Foundation for the appeal in 2016 – if the same amount can be raised by Mencap NI and its supporters by the end of this year.
Mencap launched the Big Step Forward Appeal in 2014 to raise £1.7m to build, equip and run the new centre by January 2016. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, combined with individual donations, like the one from the Rory Foundation, the appeal is well on its way to hitting its target.
Brian Ambrose, Chair of Mencap’s Big Step Forward Appeal said: “Rory’s opening drive of £250,000 is a game changer for the Big Step Forward appeal, coming as it does with the prospect of even greater funding attached.
“Mencap’s new facility will focus on developing the independence of children and young people with a learning disability and providing families with valuable emotional and practical support.
“Already, the appeal has raised £1.2million in funds, which is great news, but we still need £500,000 to make our dream a reality.
“Having the Rory Foundation’s support will act as great encouragement for others to support our appeal and we call on everyone to help us get over the finish line by fundraising in whatever way they can,” Brian said.
The Rory Foundation was established in 2013 to offer support to charities with a special meaning and purpose for Rory.
Rory McIlroy said; “When the Rory Foundation was established, initiatives like this one were exactly the type of projects we wanted to really get behind.
“I have no doubt children with a learning disability and their families will benefit from this inspirational project. I’m delighted that the Rory Foundation can help Mencap take a really big step forward in making this vision a reality”.
