The Rory Foundation Host The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open 2015 For the first year

The Rory Foundation hosted the Irish Open for the first time in 2015. Rory McIlroy significantly increased his commitment to the Irish Open with the announcement that his charitable foundation, The Rory Foundation, would become the official tournament host.

The 2015 Irish Open hosted by The Rory Foundation took place from the 28th to the 31st of May in McIlroy’s native Northern Ireland at Royal County Down, a venue which is particularly close to the World Number One’s heart and one which witnessed his final appearance as an amateur, in the 2007 Walker Cup.

Since making my debut in 2005, the Irish Open has always been a special tournament to me. I am excited to be partnering with George O’Grady and The European Tour, especially for next year’s tournament at Royal County Down – Rory McIlroy

The Rory Foundation, set up in 2013 to raise funds for children’s charities across the world, became the tournament’s official charity, with the beneficiaries chosen by the Foundation in conjunction with The European Tour. The Cancer Fund for Children, located just a few miles from Royal County Down, benefitted from the monies raised in 2015.

It’s a coincidence, but a nice one, allowing the Cancer Fund for Children to be introduced to other golfers who would be moved and engaged by what it does – Rory McIlroy

The charity were present at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and had an information stand for anyone interested in finding out more about the work they do. A fundraiser also took place at Daisy Lodge on the Tuesday before the tournament begin. Alongside Rory, Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia were just some of the golfers who showed their support for the Cancer Fund for Children and the Rory Foundation.

We are thrilled that Rory is back in Newcastle supporting a hard-working local charity that is close to his heart. To date, over 400 exhausted families have already enjoyed a relaxing break there where they have benefited from the unique support of our Specialists and been able to spend time together and recharge. Money raised via the Rory Foundation at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open will help us continue to provide short breaks in addition to other vital services such as one-to-one support, residentials, financial support and bereavement support. Our aim is to ensure no child or family faces cancer alone – Gillian Creevy, CEO the Cancer Fund for Children

“As the Chief Executive of The European Tour, it has been a true pleasure watching Rory’s transition from one of the world’s leading amateur golfers in 2007 to the Number One golfer in the world and a four-time Major Champion. The European Tour is thrilled that Rory and his Foundation would wish to partner with the Tour and become more closely involved in the development of the IrishOpen. It further demonstrates Rory’s uniquely special qualities and his commitment not simply to his national Open, but also to The European Tour – George O’Grady, Chief Executive of the European Tour
